Download ZIP Raw SCMandLLM.md I. Challenges of revision control in the LLM era Software development is changing rapidly and the tool stack has yet to catch up. As we see, the value of IDEs diminishes as developers are less inclined to edit the code now. More and more of the work is browsing and talking to LLMs, less and less is coding and debugging. About 8 years ago I gave a talk at the internal JetBrains conference “Code is hypertext, IDE is a browser”. My points look even more relevant now: effective browsing of code and history is a prerequisite to effective understanding. Understanding underlies everything now. No understanding = no control, then a developer is like a rider who fell off a horse with his foot caught in the stirrup (you may search YouTube to understand what I mean). git is increasingly becoming a point of friction. LLMs have high throughput in regard to code edits. Sorting out the changes then takes disproportionate time and often repeats your previous work, if you actually read the diffs during the session, which I highly recommend. Even single-person development now becomes collaborative: at the very least, your collaborator is an LLM. In calm waters, running several agents is nothing special. Then I have an entire team, with all the merges and rebases (which we like to do beyond any measure). That is why I think it is the right time to look for git replacements, and that is why I am working on one. Two different tricks for fast LLM inference Anthropic and OpenAI both recently announced “fast mode”: a way to interact with their best coding model at significantly higher speeds. These two versions of fast mode are very different. Anthropic’s offers up to 2.5x tokens per second (so around 170, up from Opus 4.6’s 65). OpenAI’s offers more than 1000 tokens per second (up from GPT-5.3-Codex’s 65 tokens per second, so 15x). So OpenAI’s fast mode is six times faster than Anthropic’s 1 . However, Anthropic’s big advantage is that they’re serving their actual model. When you use their fast mode, you get real Opus 4.6, while when you use OpenAI’s fast mode you get GPT-5.3-Codex-Spark, not the real GPT-5.3-Codex. Spark is indeed much faster, but is a notably less capable model: good enough for many tasks, but it gets confused and messes up tool calls in ways that vanilla GPT-5.3-Codex would never do. Why the differences? The AI labs aren’t advertising the details of how their fast modes work, but I’m pretty confident it’s something like this: Anthropic’s fast mode is backed by low-batch-size inference, while OpenAI’s fast mode is backed by special monster Cerebras chips . Let me unpack that a bit. How Anthropic’s fast mode works The tradeoff at the heart of AI inference economics is batching , because the main bottleneck is memory . GPUs are very fast, but moving data onto a GPU is not. Every inference operation requires copying all the tokens of the user’s prompt 2 onto the GPU before inference can start. Batching multiple users up thus increases overall throughput at the cost of making users wait for the batch to be full. A good analogy is a bus system. If you had zero batching for passengers – if, whenever someone got on a bus, the bus departed immediately – commutes would be much faster for the people who managed to get on a bus . But obviously overall throughput would be much lower, because people would be waiting at the bus stop for hours until they managed to actually get on one. Anthropic’s fast mode offering is basically a bus pass that guarantees that the bus immediately leaves as soon as you get on. It’s six times the cost, because you’re effectively paying for all the other people who could have got on the bus with you, but it’s way faster 3 because you spend zero time waiting for the bus to leave. Obviously I can’t be fully certain this is right. Maybe they have access to some new ultra-fast compute that they’re running this on, or they’re doing some algorithmic trick nobody else has thought of. But I’m pretty sure this is it. Brand new compute or algorithmic tricks would likely require changes to the model (see below for OpenAI’s system), and “six times more expensive for 2.5x faster” is right in the ballpark for the kind of improvement you’d expect when switching to a low-batch-size regime. Internet history and culture is important, and the web is evolving at such a rapid pace that what might be commonplace today could be obsolete tomorrow. This project is dedicated to preserving as many experiences from these platforms as possible, so that they aren’t lost to time. Since December 2017, over 200,000 games and animations have been preserved across more than a hundred browser plugins and web technologies. In addition to our preservation efforts, we also provide a highly flexible software package for reliable navigation and playback of preserved content. Among the software that powers Flashpoint is a fully-featured launcher that acts as a frontend for the collection, a proxy that tricks games into thinking they’re running on the live web, and a sandbox that allows for secure playback of plugin-enabled content – all of which are open-source software . The project was originally started by BlueMaxima in an attempt to outrun the disappearance of webgames prior to the death of Flash. It has since evolved into a major undertaking involving hundreds of community contributors from around the world, encompassing both games and animations created for numerous internet plugins, frameworks, and standards. Flashpoint Archive operates as non-profit with the goal of furthering efforts in the preservation and accessibility of games, animations and other digital interactive experiences from the web. There are were a total of 4629 unique url_chunks classified under 4 violation types: CYBERSECURITY_PHISHING_FOA (likely Foreign Origin Actor) — 4370 url_chunks CYBERSECURITY_GREYWARE_OR_SPYWARE — 239 url_chunks CYBERSECURITY_UNCATEGORIZED — 13 url_chunks PHISHING — 7 url_chunks Attempting to visit any of these urls inside of Instagram, such as by clicking on the link in a direct message, presented multiple warnings: The most common top level domain used for these urls is t.co, the url shortener created by Twitter, and still used by X. Most of the links using that route were no longer working, but at least one was currently active: hxxps://s.mkswft.com.storage.googleapis.com/RmlsZTplNmVlMGEzNy0zOGM5LTRjNzAtOWM4Zi1kNjJiN2NkYTBlYTA=/vvvvcccccc.XML Trying to visit this link inside Instagram failed as the site’s security certificate was invalid. The webview browser and the external phone browser both threw certificate errors. I did the safe thing of bypassing those errors and landed at a fake virus page with a Google logo (hence the use of storage.googleapis.com). Clicking repair will then take you to a live app in the Apple App store. The next step would be downloading that app and reverse engineering it on a completely wiped jailbroken device that is running on a guest wifi network. I’ll have to save that research for another day. Ancient Egyptian drill bit – Press Office – Newcastle University Skip to main content Researchers at Newcastle University, and the Academy of Fine Arts, Vienna, have re-examined a small copper-alloy object excavated a century ago from a cemetery at Badari in Upper Egypt, and concluded it is the earliest identified rotary metal drill from ancient Egypt , dating to the Predynastic period (late 4th millennium BCE), before the first pharaohs ruled. The artefact (catalogued as 1924.948 A in the Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge) was found in Grave 3932, the burial of an adult man. When first published in the 1920s, the artefact – which is only 63 millimetres long and weighs about 1.5 grams – was described as “a little awl of copper, with some leather thong wound round it.” That brief note proved easy to overlook, and the object attracted little attention for decades. However, under magnification, the researchers found that the tool shows distinctive wear consistent with drilling: fine striations, rounded edges, and a slight curvature at the working end, all features that point to rotary motion, not simple puncturing. The research, which is published in the journal Egypt and the Levant , also described six coils of an extremely fragile leather thong, which the researchers argue is a remnant of the bowstring used to power a bow drill, an ancient equivalent of a hand drill, where a string wrapped around a shaft is moved back and forth by a bow to spin the drill rapidly. Dr Martin Odler, Visiting Fellow in Newcastle University’s School of History, Classics and Archaeology and lead author , explains: “The ancient Egyptians are famous for stone temples, painted tombs, and dazzling jewellery, but behind those achievements lay practical, everyday technologies that rarely survive in the archaeological record. One of the most important was the drill: a tool used to pierce wood, stone, and beads, enabling everything from furniture-making to ornament production. “This re-analysis has provided strong evidence that this object was used as a bow drill – which would have produced a faster, more controlled drilling action than simply pushing or twisting an awl-like tool by hand. Maintainers in general, and maintainers of documentation most of the time get way too little recognition for their contributions to software freedom. Myself, Arch Project Leader Levente, ArchWiki maintainer Ferdinand (Alad), and FSFE’s vice president Heiki at FOSDEM 2026 after I handed them over some hacker chocolate. The ArchWiki is a resource, I myself and many people around me regularly consult – no matter if it is actually about Arch or another Free Software distribution. There are countless times, when I read articles there to get a better understanding of the tools I daily use, like e-mail programs, editors, or all kinds of window managers I used over time. It helped me to discover some handy features or configuration tips that were difficult for me to find in the documentation of the software itself. Whenever I run into issues setting up a GNU/Linux distribution for myself or family and friends, the ArchWiki had my back! 武商集团原董事长毛冬声逝世，曾打造中国商业第一股_腾讯新闻 武商集团原董事长毛冬声逝世，曾打造中国商业第一股 21世纪经济报道 2026-02-14 15:44 发布于 广东 21世纪经济报道官方账号 2月14日消息，据 武商集团 官方公众号“武商潮”，武商集团原董事长，全国劳动模范，第八届、第九届全国人大代表、主席团成员毛冬声先生，因病于2026年2月13日在湖北省武汉市与世长辞，享年92岁。 毛冬声1935年出生于浙江余姚，15岁来到湖北武汉投奔父兄，后通过招工考试进入武汉市百货公司。1955年，毛冬声任武汉市商业局团委书记，1982年出任武汉商场总经理，1992年出任武商集团董事长。 毛冬声曾带领武商集团缔造中国商界的众多第一。1982年，他执掌武汉商场后，以大胆的思路贷款改造老商场。1985年9月1日，新武汉商场开业，开业第一年，销售额从改造前的7000万元升至两亿元，贷款当年还清，武商由此引领中国商界的改扩建热潮；1986年12月25日，武汉商场股份集团有限公司挂牌，成为武汉第一家股份制企业，也是全国首家进行股份制改造的商业企业； 1992年11月20日，“鄂武商”登陆深圳证券交易所，成为“湖北第一股”“中国商业第一股”。 从1992年到1999年，短短八年的时间，武商从一家单体商场发展成集团公司，成为湖北省领先的商业龙头企业。到2000年，武商年销售达到35亿元，是开业第一年的199倍。 2004年8月，69岁的毛冬声辞任武商集团董事长。 此时的武商总资产达34亿元，相当于在国家投资的基础上，赚回了350个“原武商”。
