CBS didn’t air Rep. James Talarico interview out of fear of FCC

Stephen Colbert says CBS didn’t air Rep. James Talarico interview out of fear of FCC IE 11 is not supported. For an optimal experience visit our site on another browser. Skip to Content Stephen Colbert in Los Angeles in 2025. Kevin Winter / Getty Images Add NBC News to Google Feb. 17, 2026, 10:39 AM EST By Mirna Alsharif Listen to this article with a free account 00:00 00:00 “Late Show” host Stephen Colbert said CBS did not air his Monday interview with Senate candidate Rep. James Talarico, D-Texas, out of fear of the Federal Communications Commission. Colbert kicked off Monday night’s show by almost immediately mentioning Talarico’s absence. “He was supposed to be here, but we were told in no uncertain terms by our network’s lawyers, who called us directly, that we could not have him on the broadcast,” Colbert said. “Then, then I was told in some uncertain terms that not only could I not have him on, I could not mention me not having him on. And because my network clearly doesn’t want us to talk about this, let’s talk about this.” CBS and the FCC did not immediately respond to requests for comment. “The Late Show” published the unaired interview with Talarico on YouTube. In the interview, Colbert and Talarico discuss the FCC crackdown, including opening a probe into ABC’s “The View,” after Talarico appeared on the show. “I think that Donald Trump is worried that we’re about to flip Texas,” Talarico said, which was met with audience applause. “This is the party that ran against cancel culture, and now they’re trying to control what we watch, what we say, what we read. And this is the most dangerous kind of cancel culture, the kind that comes from the top.” Talarico accused the Trump administration of “selling out the First Amendment to curry favor with corrupt politicians.” “A threat to any of our First Amendment rights is a threat to all of our First Amendment rights.” CBS’ move to not air the segment comes as the FCC, the government’s media regulator, and most notably its chairman, Brendan Carr, have been particularly combative with networks that have drawn the ire of the president. Trump has for months suggested the FCC could revoke the licenses of television broadcasters . More recently, Carr, who was appointed by Trump to lead the FCC, has said that daytime and late-night TV talk shows must comply with the equal time rule regarding political candidates . The FCC’s equal time rule prohibits radio and broadcast channels from hosting political candidates during an election without giving airtime to their opponents. During his show Monday, Colbert highlighted that news interviews and talk show interviews with politicians are exceptions. On Jan. 21, Carr released a letter warning networks about the rule, saying that he is considering eliminating exceptions due to the networks’ potential partisan motivations. Colbert fired back at Carr on Monday, accusing the chairman of being motivated by partisan purposes. “Let’s just call this what it is: Donal

Hamming Distance for Hybrid Search in SQLite

Hamming Distance for Hybrid Search in SQLite Hamming Distance for Hybrid Search in SQLite Published on 5 February 2026 This article shows how I implemented semantic search in SQLite using binary embeddings and Hamming distance, enabling hybrid search without external vector databases. SQLite’s FTS5 extension provides excellent text search with BM25 ranking. However, it doesn’t support semantic search, which means you can’t combine keyword matching with meaning-based retrieval, a technique known as hybrid search. Binary embeddings and Hamming distance Semantic search works by converting text into numerical vectors (embeddings) that capture meaning (in my case, I do that via an API). Similar texts (i.e., talking about the same things) produce similar vectors. Embeddings generally use float32 values, that is, a 1024-dimensional embedding requires 4KiB per document. Binary embeddings quantize each dimension to a single bit (0 or 1). This reduces storage dramatically, because 1024 dimensions become only 128 bytes. The similarity metric changes from cosine distance to Hamming distance, so it also allows using fast simple bit operations vs more expensive floating-point arithmetic. The tradeoff is accuracy: binary quantization loses information. For many applications (including mine), this is acceptable given the storage and speed benefits, especially if it’s combined with another classic text search algorithm like BM25. Hamming Distance Hamming distance counts the number of bit positions where two binary vectors differ. Example with 8-bit vectors: Position: 0 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 Vector A: 1 0 1 1 0 1 1 0 Vector B: 1 0 0 1 1 0 1 0 ^ ^ ^ Bits differ at positions 2, 4, and 5. Hamming distance = 3. For semantic search, lower Hamming distance means higher similarity . To compute Hamming distance efficiently, we XOR the two vectors (1 where bits differ, 0 where same), then count the 1s (population count or “popcount”). Modern CPUs have dedicated popcount instructions, making this very fast. Example: Vector A: 1 0 1 1 0 1 1 0 Vector B: 1 0 0 1 1 0 1 0 A XOR B: 0 0 1 0 1 1 0 0 popcount(A XOR B) = 3 ones = distance of 3 Implementation as a SQLite extension SQLite extensions are dynamically loaded shared libraries ( .so on Linux, .dylib on macOS) that can register custom SQL functions. This is simpler than forking SQLite or using external tools. The extension needs to: Register the function name with SQLite, implement the computation logic, and finally handle BLOB inputs and return an integer result. Registration code: #include #include SQLITE_EXTENSION_INIT1 int sqlite3_extension_init( sqlite3 *db, char **pzErrMsg, const sqlite3_api_routines *pApi ){ SQLITE_EXTENSION_INIT2(pApi); return sqlite3_create_function( db, “hamming_distance”, 2, /* Name when called from SQL */ SQLITE_UTF8 | SQLITE_DETERMINISTIC, 0, hamming_distance, 0, 0 ); } The core function receives two BLOB arguments (the binary vectors) and returns their Hamming distance: static

America’s Pensions Can’t Beat Vanguard but They Can Close Your Hospital

America’s Pensions Can’t Beat a Vanguard Account Or Finance a Transmission Line, But They Can Close Your Hospital Governance Cybernetics Subscribe Sign in Industrial & Innovation Policy America’s Pensions Can’t Beat a Vanguard Account Or Finance a Transmission Line, But They Can Close Your Hospital $6 trillion in patient capital, $60+ billion in annual fees, and the infrastructure that never gets built Dave Deek Feb 17, 2026 1 Share While Cass is on target in pointing to the waste and abuse in the financial sector, the big question is where is the rest of the economics profession? Supposedly, eliminating waste and corruption was the mantra of “free trade” neo-liberals. But the massive waste and corruption in the financial sector is easy for anyone with clear eyes to see. – Dean Baker Everyone who reads this publication knows what needs to get built. More grid transmission. More nuclear plants. More housing. More automated industrial capacity. The policy conversation has gotten good at identifying the demand side: permitting reform, regulatory overhaul, federal lending, emergency declarations. All essential, all should continue. What almost nobody talks about is the supply side of capital. Scratch that, a lot of critics keeps talking about how YIMBYs, industrial policy wonks, and the rest don’t have a clue how to finance their proposals (despite the mountain of literature saying otherwise). That capital exists. There is roughly $6 trillion of it, sitting in American public pension funds, currently being allocated in a way that serves nobody. Oren Cass ’s recent New York Times column describes an American financial sector that has stopped fueling the real economy and started consuming it. Dean Baker , writing at the Center for Economic and Policy Research, endorsed Cass’s diagnosis and added a complementary set of regulatory reform proposals. Both focus on constraining finance: transaction taxes, bankruptcy reform, cultural stigma. Neither addresses where the capital should go instead, or why the largest pool of patient capital in the American economy is the right place to start. A conservative populist and a progressive labor economist who has called finance a cancer on the economy , arriving at the same diagnosis. The mathematical mystery inside the legendary ’90s shooter Quake 3

The mathematical mystery inside the legendary ’90s shooter Quake 3 | Scientific American February 16, 2026 6 min read Add Us On Google Add SciAm The mathematical mystery inside the legendary ’90s shooter Quake 3 Deep within the source code of this online multiplayer game lies an enigmatic number that puzzles and inspires experts to this day By Manon Bischoff edited by Daisy Yuhas tabcreator/Getty Images Game developers didn’t have it easy in the 1990s. Because they had extremely limited computing power, they had to write their code as efficiently as possible. Consider the first-person shooter Quake III Arena, usually called Quake 3, for example: players navigated a three-dimensional world, so the programmers had to find the cleverest ways to handle 3D graphics and the associated calculations. Quake 3 released in 1999 and is considered one of the best computer games of its time. It had a lasting impact on the industry. This legacy wasn’t so much due to the story, but rather because Quake 3 was one of the first multiplayer first-person shooters. Players could connect their computers via network cables or the internet to compete in real time. The game’s code left a mark too. It included an extremely efficient algorithm that still amazes experts and sparks curiosity among scientists. A strange code To figure out the orientations of objects, characters or other players in three-dimensional space mathematically, you create a vector, which is essentially an arrow that shows direction. To compare vectors, they need to be normalized to the same length, so you have to scale them accordingly. And that’s where a tricky calculation comes up: the inverse square root, which is one divided by the square root of a number. If I asked you to calculate the inverse square root of 26 without a calculator, you’d probably be stuck for a while—and honestly, so would I. Back in the 1990s computers faced the same challenge. Although they could crunch the numbers, the process demanded a lot of processing power—which can mean the calculation takes a lot of time. One problem was the square root itself; another was the division. That’s why the Quake 3 programmers hunted for a better way to find this inverse square root. And indeed, their source code revealed an ingenious solution. What’s fascinating is that the developers never advertised their trick. If Quake 3’s source code hadn’t gone open source, their method might have stayed hidden forever. But once it was released, curious enthusiasts took notice. When they discovered the code snippet for calculating the inverse square root, they were baffled—it was difficult to follow, and the developers’ accompanying comments weren’t particularly helpful. How teaching molecules to think is revealing what a ‘mind’ is

How teaching molecules to think is revealing what a ‘mind’ really is | New Scientist Close Advertisement Subscribe now Tom Gauld We all struggle with self-control sometimes. We tell ourselves only one more piece of chocolate, one more glass of wine, one more episode of a binge-worthy series before bed, but then carry on regardless. But who, or what, even is this “self” engaging in this push and pull, before giving in to temptation? The cells in our gut somehow collaborate with those in our brain and hands to reach for the chocolate bar, the wine bottle or the “next episode” button. And, with ever-increasing complexity, at some point a line is crossed, and the whole becomes more than the sum of its parts. That is to say, a self – the entity which acts in the world in ways that serve your goals and desires – emerges. What if, though, “selves” are present in those very cells, ahead of the point at which they merge to form a greater whole? It might sound outlandish, but biological simulations are indicating that those minuscule units of life, which we usually think about as passive machines – cogs blindly governed by the laws of physics – have their own goals and display agency. Surprisingly, even simple networks of biomolecules appear to display some degree of a self, a revelation that could lead to novel ways of treating health conditions with far fewer side effects. What’s more, some biologists say this new grasp of selfhood can reveal what is special about life and how it began in the first place. “The origins of agency coincide with the origins of life,” says cognitive scientist Tom Froese at the Okinawa Institute of Science and Technology in Japan. Read more A whole new world of tiny beings challenges fundamental ideas of life Intelligent agents Selves are more technically defined by biologists and neuroscientists as “agents” that have goals and act in ways that achieve those goals. Agents aren’t simply pushed around by their environment, but alter themselves and their environment in purposeful ways. In other words, they have causal power over themselves and their environment. To behave with agency, you need to absorb information, use that information to solve problems and then learn by remembering how those actions turned out. Neuroscientists broadly call this “cognition” and use brain scanners and behavioural experiments to study this constellation of processes. Indeed, we traditionally ascribe cognition only to things with brains. “It’s easy to get caught up in the idea that brains are our first example of cognition, and a lot of people therefore think that brains must be special [in this respect],” says theoretical biologist Emily Dolson at Michigan State University. But a growing number of researchers have been investigating where else these abilities show up, applying similar methods to much simpler organisms that lack brains in any conventional sense. In the past few years, studies of the behaviour and electrical and chemical signalling

How it works It starts from the moment you fire up your coding agent. As soon as it sees that you’re building something, it doesn’t just jump into trying to write code. Instead, it steps back and asks you what you’re really trying to do. Once it’s teased a spec out of the conversation, it shows it to you in chunks short enough to actually read and digest. After you’ve signed off on the design, your agent puts together an implementation plan that’s clear enough for an enthusiastic junior engineer with poor taste, no judgement, no project context, and an aversion to testing to follow. It emphasizes true red/green TDD, YAGNI (You Aren’t Gonna Need It), and DRY. Next up, once you say “go”, it launches a subagent-driven-development process, having agents work through each engineering task, inspecting and reviewing their work, and continuing forward. It’s not uncommon for Claude to be able to work autonomously for a couple hours at a time without deviating from the plan you put together. There’s a bunch more to it, but that’s the core of the system. And because the skills trigger automatically, you don’t need to do anything special. Your coding agent just has Superpowers. It combines an advanced implementation of directional ablation, also known as “abliteration” ( Arditi et al. 2024 , Lai 2025 ( 1 , 2 )), with a TPE-based parameter optimizer powered by Optuna . This approach enables Heretic to work completely automatically. Heretic finds high-quality abliteration parameters by co-minimizing the number of refusals and the KL divergence from the original model. This results in a decensored model that retains as much of the original model’s intelligence as possible. Using Heretic does not require an understanding of transformer internals. In fact, anyone who knows how to run a command-line program can use Heretic to decensor language models. Running unsupervised with the default configuration, Heretic can produce decensored models that rival the quality of abliterations created manually by human experts: Model Refusals for “harmful” prompts KL divergence from original model for “harmless” prompts google/gemma-3-12b-it (original) 97/100 0 (by definition) mlabonne/gemma-3-12b-it-abliterated-v2 3/100 1.04 huihui-ai/gemma-3-12b-it-abliterated 3/100 0.45 p-e-w/gemma-3-12b-it-heretic (ours) 3/100 0.16 The Heretic version, generated without any human effort, achieves the same level of refusal suppression as other abliterations, but at a much lower KL divergence, indicating less damage to the original model’s capabilities. (You can reproduce those numbers using Heretic’s built-in evaluation functionality, e.g. heretic –model google/gemma-3-12b-it –evaluate-model p-e-w/gemma-3-12b-it-heretic .
