Breaking the spell of vibe coding

Breaking the Spell of Vibe Coding – fast.ai Vibe coding is the creation of large quantities of highly complex AI-generated code, often with the intention that the code will not be read by humans. It has cast quite a spell on the tech industry. Executives push lay-offs claiming AI can handle the work. Managers pressure employees to meet quotas of how much of their code must be AI-generated or risk poor performance reviews. Software developers worry that everyone around them is a “10x developer” and that they’ve fallen behind. College students wonder if it is worth studying computer science now that AI has automated coding. People of all career stages hesitate to invest in their own career development. Won’t AI be able to do their jobs for them anyway a year from now? What is the point? I work at an AI company , and we use AI every day. AI is useful! However, we approach vibe coding with caution and have seen that much can go wrong. The results of vibe coding have been far from what early enthusiasts promised. Well-known software developer Armin Ronacher powerfully described some of the issues with AI coding agents . “ When [I first got] hooked on Claude, I did not sleep. I spent two months excessively prompting the thing and wasting tokens. I ended up building and building and creating a ton of tools I did not end up using much… Quite a few of the tools I built I felt really great about, just to realize that I did not actually use them or they did not end up working as I thought they would .” Armin titled his post “agent psychosis” . The term “psychosis” is a strong label. What is it about this technology which could be trapping such productive and experienced developers? The reason may be similar to the addictive qualities of gambling, a sinister under-current of the normally positive state of flow. Not all Focus is Flow When coding or doing other creative work, many of us experience a state of flow : full absorption and energized focus. This concept was first formalized by psychologist Mihaly Csikszentmihalyi in the 1970s. In his 1990 best-selling book, he described flow as “ a sense that one’s skills are adequate to cope with the challenges at hand, in a goal-directed, rule-bound action system that provides clear clues as to how well one is performing .” There are activities that can produce feelings of absorption and engaged focus that don’t meet this positive definition of flow. Consider gambling. A key aspect of flow is that the challenge faced be reasonably matched to the person’s skills. “ Roulette players develop elaborate systems to predict the turn of the wheel, ”Csikszentmihalyi writes of how gamblers often believe their skills are playing a significant role, even in games governed entirely by chance. Csikszentmihalyi emphasized the importance of skill and challenge being appropriately matched. He later highlighted that optimal flow occurs with high skill and high challenge. How often do full-body MRIs find cancer?

Full-body MRIs and how often they find cancer, aneurysms HEALTH AND WELLNESS Healthcare Add Topic How often do full-body MRIs actually find cancer? David Oliver USA TODAY Feb. 11, 2026 Updated Feb. 12, 2026, 9:00 a.m. ET Hear this story Picture this: At your annual physical with your primary care provider, you also receive a full-body scan and a more extensive panel of bloodwork. Just to make sure that you are 100% fine, nothing is wrong with you, you can go on your way and not worry a second longer about your health. Or if there is something, even tiny, now you can fix it before it gets worse. Sounds perfect, right? That’s a future many envision thanks to a health and wellness longevity culture brimming with innovation aimed at keeping us healthier for longer. “Sometimes, even if we have a great lifestyle, it’s important to get a baseline, because we don’t really understand,” says Andrew Lacy , founder and CEO of full-body MRI company Prenuvo. “Everyone’s genetics are unique. And some people can be fit and have liver problems or fit and have sort of inflammatory bowel problems. And knowing this is just really helpful.” As exciting as it seems, others in the medical community are skeptical – particularly about full-body MRIs. Dr. Manjiri Dighe , Professor of Radiology at the University of Washington School of Medicine, says that “whole body MRI is in its clinical infancy. While it is non-invasive and highly sensitive, it lacks the large-scale longitudinal data needed to prove that it saves more lives than it complicates through overdiagnosis.” With low availability and high cost, for the average person, it remains a luxury item not an “evidence-based medical necessity.” The tests range from several hundred to several thousand dollars, depending on which sections of the body are scanned, and are not covered by insurance. Research shows these test often find something, but much less often find actual disease. One study in 2020 found that 95% of asymptomatic patients had some type of “abnormal” finding, but just 1.8% of these findings were indeed cancer. Research has varied on just how many incidental findings occur from these tests . Need a news break? Check out the all new PLAY hub with puzzles, games and more! Prenuvo’s recent Polaris Study followed 1,011 patients for at least one year following a whole-body MRI scan. Of these patients, 41 had biopsies. More than half of the 41 were diagnosed with cancer. Of these cancers, 68% didn’t have targeted screening tests and 64% were localized when detected. The company says it finds possibly life-threatening conditions in 1 in 20 people. What’s the average person to do? Full-body MRI results ‘all about context’ Dr. Daniel Sodickson , chief medical scientist at Function and adjunct professor in the Department of Radiology at New York University, has been working on MRI and other imaging technology for nearly 30 years. It’s a pretty quiet day — the new Dwarkesh-Dario pod is worthwhile but hasn’t generated much new conversation on day 1, and OpenAI claimed a big result in theoretical physics that is mostly getting questioned by some physicists. This means we get to go back to our backlog of mini-editorial ideas for AINews subscribers! We’re still not over the Sam Altman town hall ; at the town hall he said “ tell us what we should build, we’ll probably build it! ” and today at Stanford Treehacks he said a variant of the same thing: he thinks of himself as having made a career out of doing things people think are hard, but would be a big deal if it came true. well okay, Sam: You Should Build Slack. It fits your criteria: it is hard for anyone else without the clout of OpenAI to pull off, it will be very well received by the tech community, and it is an obvious progression of ChatGPT for both your Enterprise -and- your Coding push and build permanent entrenchment in your customers. Slack rejected developer community and went upmarket in 2019, then Salesforce bought it for $27.7B in 2021 , and ever since then Slack has been on a slow rachet up in prices and has struggled to introduce compelling new AI features ( Slack AI is occasionally useful but impossible to discover/learn/personalize) while facing constant outages . NPS feels low, and yet every organization in tech uses it. Everything could be better . Developers routinely complain about Slack’s API costs and permissions (even 3rd or 4th Uber investor and famed vibe coder Jason Calacanis complained on the latest All In podcast ). Founders routinely complain about the pricing. Slack users complain about channel fatigue and find the Recap tooling and notifications spam woefully inadequate. Huddles could offer far better realtime multimodal AI features. Slack Connect is great though, definitely just clone that. Sure, ChatGPT launched group chats 3 months ago and probably the usage isn’t great outside of OpenAI. It’d be a mistake to think that repeated half hearted attempts in consumer social AI means that you can’t build a successful business social network if you took it as seriously as you do everything else. Microsoft did, and Teams is by all reports a solid success. In the desktop wars, Anthropic has pursued a far more cohesive strategy than OpenAI: one app for Chat, Cowork, and Claude Code, with optional control of the browser via Claude in Chrome. By contrast, OpenAI

News publishers limit Internet Archive access due to AI scraping concerns | Nieman Journalism Lab HOME About Subscribe Archives Foundation Reports Storyboard LATEST STORY Washington Post layoffs disproportionately affected union members of color, preliminary Guild data shows Business Models Mobile & Apps Audience & Social Aggregation & Discovery Reporting & Production ABOUT SUBSCRIBE Business Models Mobile & Apps Audience & Social Aggregation & Discovery Reporting & Production Translations Jan. 28, 2026, 3:09 p.m. Aggregation & Discovery Business Models News publishers limit Internet Archive access due to AI scraping concerns Outlets like The Guardian and The New York Times are scrutinizing digital archives as potential backdoors for AI crawlers. By Andrew Deck and Hanaa’ Tameez Jan. 28, 2026, 3:09 p.m. Jan. 28, 2026, 3:09 p.m. As part of its mission to preserve the web, the Internet Archive operates crawlers that capture webpage snapshots. Many of these snapshots are accessible through its public-facing tool, the Wayback Machine . But as AI bots scavenge the web for training data to feed their models, the Internet Archive’s commitment to free information access has turned its digital library into a potential liability for some news publishers. When The Guardian took a look at who was trying to extract its content, access logs revealed that the Internet Archive was a frequent crawler, said Robert Hahn , head of business affairs and licensing. The publisher decided to limit the Internet Archive’s access to published articles, minimizing the chance that AI companies might scrape its content via the nonprofit’s repository of over one trillion webpage snapshots. RELATED ARTICLE The Wayback Machine’s snapshots of news homepages plummet after a “breakdown” in archiving projects Andrew Deck October 21, 2025 Specifically, Hahn said The Guardian has taken steps to exclude itself from the Internet Archive’s APIs and filter out its article pages from the Wayback Machine’s URLs interface. The Guardian’s regional homepages, topic pages, and other landing pages will continue to appear in the Wayback Machine. In particular, Hahn expressed concern about the Internet Archive’s APIs . “A lot of these AI businesses are looking for readily available, structured databases of content,” he said. “The Internet Archive’s API would have been an obvious place to plug their own machines into and suck out the IP.” (He admits the Wayback Machine itself is “less risky,” since the data is not as well-structured.) As news publishers try to safeguard their contents from AI companies, the Internet Archive is also getting caught in the crosshairs. The Financial Times, for example, blocks any bot that tries to scrape its paywalled content, including bots from OpenAI, Anthropic, Perplexity, and the Internet Archive. The majority of FT stories are paywalled, according to director of global public policy and platform strategy Matt Rogerson . As a result, usually only unpaywalled FT sto

You can’t trust the internet anymore

You Can’t Trust the Internet Anymore This is a “byte” post. It may not be as detailed as other posts. I like things that are strange and a bit obscure. It’s a habit of mine, and a lot of this blog is to document things I haven’t heard of before, because I wanted to learn about them. I mean, jeez, I’m certainly not writing blog posts about strip mahjong because the people demand it. But I can’t stop seeing misinformation everywhere, and I have to say something. This post is just a rant. Phantasy Star Fukkokuban This is Phantasy Star Fukkokuban , a Japanese Sega Genesis game released in 1994 to commemorate the release of Phantasy Star IV by re-releasing the original. It has an interesting component: it is the Master System game, just packaged into a Genesis cart. The PCB wires the Genesis lines the same way your Power Base Converter would. My guess is the reason for this is because the Master System wasn’t very popular in Japan, and Phantasy Star IV tied together the whole series with a lot of tiebacks to the first one in particular. As a Master System game disguised as a Genesis one, this game is technically interesting. Some Genesis consoles can’t play Master System games, and those ones can’t play this game either. Also, I love the Phantasy Star series; even if 2 is my favorite. This makes this cartridge a perfect subject for my interest, so I’ve talked about it before and will talk about it again. In fact, I have a post I’m working on where I mention it. So there I was, writing a blog post, and wanted to look up the release date. The first result I found in DuckDuckGo, my search engine? GameFAQs is at the top; a titan since the 1990’s. The second result is The Cutting Room Floor , a wiki much beloved by myself. And then the third result is “Press Start Gaming” . And here’s a thing about me. I want to trust new websites. I have a bias towards clicking on articles from sites I don’t know, because to be quite honest, I’ve read the TCRF page on Phantasy Star a thousand times. How else do you learn something new? Also, I clicked it because the headline was “Phantasy Star Fukkokuban: A Classic Reimagined”. Because here’s the thing. It talks about how the graphics were improved: Phantasy Star Fukkokuban breathes new life into the classic with its updated graphics and sound design. The visual overhaul retains the charm of the original’s 8-bit aesthetics while incorporating modern graphical techniques. Characters and environments are rendered with enhanced detail, vibrant colors, and fluid animations, creating a visually captivating experience. The art style honors the game’s roots, with character designs and enemy sprites redesigned to reflect contemporary standards while maintaining their recognizability. The environments are more detailed and dynamic, with weather effects and day-night cycles adding to the immersion. Well, compare the title screen shots of Phantasy Star above. Which one is Fukkokuban and which one is my personal copy, played through

Internet Increasingly Becoming Unarchivable

My smart sleep mask broadcasts users’ brainwaves to an open MQTT broker

My smart sleep mask broadcasts users’ brainwaves to an open MQTT broker | aimilios My smart sleep mask broadcasts users’ brainwaves to an open MQTT broker 12 Feb, 2026 I recently got a smart sleep mask from Kickstarter. I was not expecting to end up with the ability to read strangers’ brainwaves and send them electric impulses in their sleep. But here we are. The mask was from a small Chinese research company, very cool hardware — EEG brain monitoring, electrical muscle stimulation around the eyes, vibration, heating, audio. The app was still rough around the edges though and the mask kept disconnecting, so I asked Claude to try reverse-engineer the Bluetooth protocol and build me a simple web control panel instead. Bluetooth The first thing Claude did was scan for BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) devices nearby. It found mine among 35 devices in range, connected, and mapped the interface — two data channels. One for sending commands, one for streaming data. Then it tried talking to it. Sent maybe a hundred different command patterns. Modbus frames, JSON, raw bytes, common headers. Unfortunately, the device said nothing back, the protocol was not a standard one. The app So Claude went after the app instead. Grabbed the Android APK, decompiled it with jadx. Turns out the app is built with Flutter, which is a bit of a problem for reverse engineering. Flutter compiles Dart source code into native ARM64 machine code — you can’t just read it back like normal Java Android apps. The actual business logic lives in a 9MB binary blob. But even compiled binaries have strings in them. Error messages, URLs, debug logs. Claude ran strings on the binary and this was the most productive step of the whole session. Among the thousands of lines of Flutter framework noise, it found: Hardcoded credentials for the company’s message broker (shared by every copy of the app) Cloud API endpoints All fifteen command builder function names (e.g. to set vibration, heating, electric stimulation, etc.) Protocol debug messages that revealed the packet structure — header, direction byte, command type, payload, footer We had the shape of the protocol. Still didn’t have the actual byte values though. Claude then used blutter , a tool specifically for decompiling Flutter’s compiled Dart snapshots. It reconstructs the functions with readable annotations. Claude figured out the encoding, and just read off every command byte from every function. Fifteen commands, fully mapped. It works Claude sent a six-byte query packet. The device came back with 153 bytes — model number, firmware version, serial number, all eight sensor channel configurations (EEG at 250Hz, respiration, 3-axis accelerometer, 3-axis gyroscope). Battery at 83%. Vibration control worked. Heating worked. EMS worked. Music worked. Claude built me a little web dashboard with sliders for everything. I was pretty happy with it. That could have been the end of the story. The server Remember the hardcoded credentials from earl

Shades of Halftone

Shades of Halftone – The Blog of Maxime Heckel Shades of Halftone Feb 10, 2026 Feb 10, 2026 There has recently been a newfound excitement for pattern-based post-processing effects all over my timeline, as softwares such as Paper , Efecto , or Unicorn Studio are democratizing the use of shaders for both designers and developers. While some of these patterns originated as workarounds due to technical limitations we have since overcome, they now serve as an artistic direction to create distinct designs with self-imposed constraints. One of those effects that kept coming back over and over again is halftone , the classic dot pattern, arranging dots of different sizes in a grid to give the optical illusion of a gradient of color to the observer. This technique was originally used to print images with limited ink colors, while today, it is more a versatile artistic tool used across media and the web to give some kind of texture or grain to digital outputs. I personally find this effect very interesting, as it is inherently simple to implement in its classic form, but can quickly branch off to some complex and intricate visuals. I’ve dedicated a lot of time over the past few months to trying the different flavors that halftone can take and overlaying them on top of static images, videos, or interactive 3D scenes as shaders. Simple dots on a grid , ink splatters , grids overlapping at an angle yielding some Moiré effects , blending colors in interesting ways , breaking the grid , etc. I even tried my hand at seeing how halftone could be animated in a fun yet meaningful way. Every single one of these variants had its own interesting implementation details/shading techniques and aesthetic that I felt were worth writing about and breaking down to make building and designing with halftone more approachable. Enjoying my writing and feeling like supporting my work? You can show your appreciation by buying me a coffee (I really really really do like coffee) which will give me the much-needed energy (and fuel my caffeine addiction) to take on more ambitious/high-quality articles and (probably over-engineered but fun) projects. As a token of gratitude, your name will be featured on this little screen below! MADE IN NYC – @MAXIMEHECKEL – 2025 – MADE IN NYC – @MAXIMEHECKEL – 2025 – MADE IN NYC – @MAXIMEHECKEL – 2025 – MADE IN NYC – @MAXIMEHECKEL – 2025 – Thank you for reading! Behind the Dot Pattern I explored several optical illusions and “trompe l’oeil” post-processing effects in Post-Processing Shaders as a Creative Medium that create the illusion of texture or material, like woven crochet or glass. Halftone is, funnily enough, not so different as it is inherently an optical illusion itself. The effect creates the impression of continuous/smooth tones, much like dithering, by providing a high-frequency grid of dots. Because these dots can be smaller than the eye’s spatial resolution , the brain ends up performing a spatial average of the pattern . Thus, past a c
