It seemed like there was no turning back from the orchard for me. Phone, laptop, watch, tablet, video and music streaming, cloud storage, and even a key tracker. All from one manufacturer. Plus shared family photo albums, calendars, and even shopping lists. However, at some point, I discovered Plenti , a company that rents a really wide range of different devices at quite reasonable prices. Casually, I threw the phrase “samsung fold” into the search engine on their website and it turned out that the Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 6 could be rented for just 250-300 PLN per month. That was quite an interesting option, as I was insanely curious about how it is to live with a foldable phone, which after unfolding becomes the equivalent of a tablet. Plus, I would never dare to buy this type of device, because firstly, their price is astronomical, and secondly, I have serious doubts about the longevity of the folding screen. I checked the rental conditions from Plenti and nothing raised my suspicions. Renting seemed like a really cool option, so I decided to get the Fold 6 for half a year. That’s how I broke out of the orchard and slightly reopened the doors to my heart for solutions without the apple logo. I even wrote a post about the whole process – I betrayed #TeamApple for broken phone . What I’m getting at is that this is how Android returned to my living room and I think I started liking it anew. My adventure with Samsung ended after the planned 6 months. The Galaxy Z Fold 6 is a good phone, and the ability to unfold it to the size of a tablet is an amazing feature. However, what bothered me about it was: after folding it was terribly thick, it couldn’t be used in a case, because all the covers either didn’t fit or slipped off the part that has screens on both sides, naked, it was very blocky, even sharp, which caused me discomfort; holding it was simply unpleasant, paying 300 PLN (~80 USD) for rent is a good short-term solution to get something to test, but not in the long run. What has changed is the volume of posts and engagement per post. It’s only natural when more projects are being built in a single weekend. There’s less “Proof of Work”. From the business side of this, Johan Halse recently called this the Sideprocalypse : the end of the small indie developer’s dream. Every idea has been built, marketed better, and SEO’d into oblivion by someone with more money. Some cool projects aren’t getting through this noise, which is a pity. No. There’s just more noise, and less opportunity to get attention and have a discussion with other folks on HN about your project. Some gems go completely unnoticed. Maybe something for HN to think about: how do these subjective “gems” get more spotlight? How does HN remain the coolest place to talk about the coolest tech?

PyTorch is currently one of the most popular deep learning frameworks. It is an open-source library built upon the Torch Library (it’s no longer in active development), and it was developed by Meta AI (previously Facebook AI). It is now part of the Linux Foundation . tensor basics Machine Learning (ML) is all about numbers. Tensor is a specialised container for those numbers. You might know tensors from maths or physics, but in machine learning, a tensor is simply PyTorch’s data type for storing numbers. Think of it like a more powerful version of a list or array. Tensors hold your training data and the weights Weights are numbers that determine how important each input is to the final decision. your model learns. What makes tensors special is that they come packed with useful functions. When you create a new tensor, you need to fill it with starting values. PyTorch offers many initialisation functions : torch.rand() , torch.randn() , torch.ones() , the list goes on. But what’s the difference between them? If they give you random numbers, which random numbers? And why there are so many ways to initialise it? The best way to understand is to see it. If we create thousands of random values using each function and plot them as a histogram, we can see exactly what to expect: import torch rand_sample = torch.rand(10000) randn_sample = torch.randn(10000) zeros_sample = torch.zeros(10) ones_sample = torch.ones(10) arange_sample = torch.arange(0, 10) linspace_sample = torch.linspace(0, 10, steps=5) eye_sample = torch.eye(5) empty_sample = torch.empty(10) Seeing it as a histogram paints a very clear picture. torch.rand() initialises tensor with random values between 0 and 1. torch.randn() with values that are mostly clustering around 0 and torch.eye() gives an identity matrix , and torch.empty() is… wait. Not empty? In theory is not empty. It allocates memory but does not initialise it, so the tensor contains whatever values happened to already be in that memory. If you see zeros, that’s just coincidence. torch.zeros() explicitly fills the tensor with zeros, whereas torch.empty() makes no guarantees at all – you should always write to it before reading from it. “Hey! What about own my data?” I’ve got you. Initialising tensors with random noise can be helpful, but ultimately, you want your own data for training. A Deep Dive into Apple’s .car File Format · DBG.RE Table of Contents Every modern iOS, macOS, watchOS, and tvOS application uses Asset Catalogs to manage images, colors, icons, and other resources. When you build an app with Xcode, your .xcassets folders are compiled into binary .car files that ship with your application. Despite being a fundamental part of every Apple app, there is little to none official documentation about this file format. In this post, I’ll walk through the process of reverse engineering the .car file format, explain its internal structures, and show how to parse these files programmatically. This knowledge could be useful for security research and building developer tools that does not rely on Xcode or Apple’s proprietary tools. As part of this research, I’ve built a custom parser and compiler for .car files that doesn’t depend on any of Apple’s private frameworks or proprietary tools. To make this research practical, I’ve compiled my parser to WebAssembly so it runs entirely in your browser, so no server uploads required. You can drop any .car file into the interactive demo below to explore its content. I’m considering open-sourcing these tools, but no promises yet! What is a .car File? When you call UIImage(named: “MyImage”) in Swift (or [UIImage imageNamed:@”MyImage”] in Objective-C), the private CoreUI.framework opens your app’s Assets.car file and retrieves the appropriate image for the current device context (screen scale, appearance mode, size class, etc) The “CAR” extension likely stands for “Compiled Asset Record” based on method names found in Xcode’s IBFoundation framework. User soneil posted to a four column version of the ASCII table that blew my mind. I just wanted to repost this here so it is easier to discover. Here’s an excerpt from the comment: I always thought it was a shame the ascii table is rarely shown in columns (or rows) of 32, as it makes a lot of this quite obvious. eg, http://pastebin.com/cdaga5i1 It becomes immediately obvious why, eg, ^[ becomes escape. Or that the alphabet is just 40h + the ordinal position of the letter (or 60h for lower-case). Or that we shift between upper & lower-case with a single bit. You know in ASCII there are 32 characters at the beginning of the table that don’t represent a written symbol. Backspace, newline, escape – that sort of thing. These are called control characters . In the terminal you can type these control characters by holding the CTRL (control characters, get it?) key in combination with another key. For example, as many experienced vim users know pressing CTRL+[ in the terminal (which is ^[ in caret notation ) is the same as pressing the ESC key. But why is the escape key triggered by the [ character? Why not another character? This is the insight soneil shares with us. Remember that ASCII is a 7 bit encoding. Let’s say the following: The first two bits denote the group of the character (2^2 so 4 possible values) The remaining five bits describe a character (2^5 so 32 possible values) In the linked table, which I reproduce below, the four groups are represented by the columns and the rows represent the values. 00 01 10 11 NUL Spc @ ` 00000 SOH ! It’s in the first group, fifth from the bottom. It’s in the first column so its group has bits ’00’, the row has bits ‘11011’. Now look on the same line, what else is there? Yep, the ‘[‘ character is there, be it in a different column: 10 11011 means [ 00 11011 means ESC So when we you type CTRL+[ for ESC , you’re asking for the equivalent of the character 11011 ( [ ) out of the control set. Pressing CTRL simply sets all bits but the last 5 to zero in the character that you typed. You can imagine it as a bitwise AND. 10 11011 ([) & 00 11111 (CTRL) = 00 11011 (ESC) This is why ^J types a newline, ^H types a backspace and ^I types a tab. SvarDOS Main page I Packages I Help I Forum SvarDOS – an open-source DOS distribution for PCs of the 1980-2000 era SvarDOS is an open-source project that is meant to integrate the best out of the currently available DOS tools, drivers and games. DOS development has been abandoned by commercial players a long time ago, mostly during early nineties. Nowadays it survives solely through the efforts of hobbyists and retro-enthusiasts, but this is a highly sparse and unorganized ecosystem. SvarDOS aims to collect available DOS software and make it easy to find and install applications using a network-enabled package manager (like apt-get, but for DOS and able to run on a 8086 PC). Minimalist and 8086-compatible Once installed, SvarDOS is a minimalistic DOS system that offers only a DOS kernel, a command interpreter and the most basic tools for system administration. It is then up to the user to install additional packages. Care is taken so SvarDOS remains 8086-compatible, at least in its most basic (core) configuration. Open-source SvarDOS is published under the terms of the MIT license. This applies only to SvarDOS-specific files, though – the auxilliary packages supplied with SvarDOS may be subject to different licenses (GPL, BSD, Public Domain, Freeware…). Multilingual The system can be set up in a wide selection of languages: English, German, French, Polish, Russian, Italian and more. No “versions” SvarDOS is a rolling release, meaning that it does not adhere to the concept of “versions”. Thinking Hard Burns Almost No Calories—But Destroys Your Next Workout | VO2 Max Pro Blog Back to Blog I had a theory for most of my adult life: hard days at work burn a lot of calories. The kind of days where you’re deep in complex problems for eight hours straight, making decisions, debugging, writing. By evening, I’d feel utterly drained. Surely all that thinking was metabolically expensive. Surely it justified skipping the interval session I’d planned. Then I looked at the numbers. And then I looked at what that cognitive exhaustion was actually doing to my workouts. The first part was humbling. The second part was alarming. Your brain is expensive, but thinking is cheap Your brain consumes roughly 20 to 25% of your body’s total energy at rest. For an organ that accounts for about 2% of your body weight, that’s extraordinarily costly. It runs almost exclusively on glucose, consuming about 120 grams per day, and it can’t store meaningful reserves. It needs a constant supply delivered through the bloodstream. Here’s the part that surprised me: almost all of that energy goes to baseline maintenance. Keeping 86 billion neurons electrically charged. Maintaining synaptic connections. Running the background processes that keep you conscious and breathing and aware of your surroundings. The “idle cost” of having a brain is enormous. The incremental cost of actually thinking hard? Almost nothing . Studies measuring brain glucose consumption during demanding cognitive tasks find increases of only about 5% above baseline. Over the course of a full day of intense mental work, that translates to maybe 100 to 200 extra calories. That’s a banana and a half. Even chess grandmasters, who sit for hours in states of intense concentration, burn only about 1.67 calories per minute while playing, compared to 1.53 calories per minute at rest. A 10% premium for one of the most cognitively demanding activities humans engage in. The reason is structural. Your brain’s energy budget is dominated by housekeeping. Maintaining the electrochemical gradients across neuronal membranes, the resting activity of vast neural networks, the constant baseline hum of consciousness. Conscious thought, the stuff that feels effortful, is a thin layer of activity on top of this expensive foundation. It’s like turning on a desk lamp in a building where the HVAC system already runs 24 hours a day. The lamp is real. It’s just not where the bill comes from. So no, your day of deep work didn’t burn enough extra calories to justify the extra slice of pizza. I found this mildly deflating. But what I found next was far more consequential. The 15% problem In 2009, Samuele Marcora and colleagues at Bangor University published a study in the Journal of Applied Physiology that I think about every time I consider training after a long cognitive day.
